Cornelian cherry – an indigenous harbinger of spring

The Cornelian cherry belongs to the most beautiful early-flowering indigenous plants. These first yellow blossoms promise the coming spring. Free-growing and in sunny positions, the Cornelian cherry develops into a large shrub or tree, yet it is extremely tolerant to pruning and can be cultivated into different trimmed shapes.

In particular, the small-growing crown makes the Cornus mas interesting for the home garden. The umbels become shiny red drupaceous fruits in the autumn; it is hard work to make jam out of these, but it is worth it. I have discovered the Cornelian cherries in different shapes: grown as boxes on trunks, spheres on trunks, free-growing tall-stemmed or with multiple trunks.
